Basque culture October 2026 arrives with a remarkable convergence of anniversaries, new beginnings and living traditions. This month marks the beginning of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the New Spanish Cuisine, a story in which the New Basque Cuisine played a defining role in transforming the way the world understands gastronomy. It is also the heart of the Rioja harvest, a season when vineyards, villages and wineries come alive with the rhythm of wine-making; a moment of recognition for the people creating new ways of experiencing wine; and a particularly exciting time for art, with the reopening of Bilbao Fine Arts Museum after its ambitious transformation.

October is therefore a wonderful month to look beyond the most familiar images of the Basque Country. The vineyards of Rioja Alavesa reveal a landscape shaped by generations of knowledge, while the Marqués de Riscal Wine City celebrates twenty years of an extraordinary encounter between wine, architecture and contemporary design. In Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum approaches its 29th anniversary, while the renewed Fine Arts Museum opens another chapter in the city’s long relationship with art. Across the region, architecture, music, cinema, literature, gastronomy and heritage offer countless ways of seeing the Basque Country through different eyes.

There is also something particularly beautiful about October in the Basque Country: the feeling of a culture in transition. The harvest gives way to the quieter rhythm of autumn; historic buildings and contemporary museums tell stories of different generations; and traditions such as Gau Beltza, the Basque Night of Souls, invite us to rediscover older ways of understanding the changing season. The European Heritage Days add another perspective, reminding us that heritage is not only found in monuments, but also in landscapes, crafts, celebrations, memories and ways of life that communities continue to keep alive.

For travellers interested in history and literature, October also offers an opportunity to follow some of the cultural connections that have travelled far beyond these mountains and shores. The 90th anniversary of the publication of Hemingway‘s The Sun Also Rises recalls his enduring fascination with the Basque Country, while the 70th anniversary of the death of Pío Baroja brings us back to one of the writers who most deeply captured the landscapes, people and atmosphere of the Basque world.

And perhaps this is what makes a cultural journey especially rewarding: not simply seeing more, but discovering the relationships between things. A museum can lead to a story about a city; a vineyard can open a conversation about landscape and tradition; a dish can reveal centuries of social history; an architect can help explain how a place has changed; and a festival can offer a glimpse of how its people understand themselves.

The selection below is my personal choice of cultural experiences, exhibitions, traditions and events taking place across the Basque Country in October 2026. I have chosen them not simply because they are important, but because each offers a different doorway into understanding this land.

Curated Basque culture experiences in Bilbao and Biscay – October 2026

  • Juan Luna Novicio in Portugalete. Works by the Filipino artist that bear witness to the industrial transformation and social change taking place in Bizkaia in 1893. Also see its permanent exhibition. Rialia Industria Museoa. From April 29th to December 30th.
  • in situ: Igshaan Adams. Raising Dust: The Body Archive. Adams transforms humble materials like rope, beads, and wire into intricate compositions that explore how race, religion, sexuality, and memory intertwine. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. May 5th–November 1st.
  • Jasper Johns: Night Driver 70 Years of Artistic Life. One of the most important figures in US art since the post-WWII era, through Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. May 29th–October 12th.
  • Fossil Guide: Archaeology of the Civil War. Exhibition of objects found in excavations of Civil War sites in the Basque Country. Research reflected in Josu Santamarina’s book “Euzkadi in Ruins”. Gernika Peace Museum. From September 17th to February 15th, 2027.
  • 10th Open Bilbao Festival 2026. Free visits to unique buildings, workshops, talks, and other activities. Celebrating International Architecture Day and World Habitat Day. September 28th to October 4th.
  • The Search for the Beginning. A tribute exhibition to the collector Plácido Arango (1931–2020), a major benefactor of the museum. Featuring guest works from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Hispanic Society of New York, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Prado Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias. Inaugural program of the newly renovated Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. Opening October 6th.
  • Balerdi. The Infinite Line. An exhibition showcasing the work of Rafael Ruiz Balerdi (1934-1992) as a draftsman, from the beginning of his career in the 1950s, through different techniques and themes. In the Cabinet: a new space dedicated to the important collection of graphic works, drawings, and photographs at the newly renovated Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. From October 6th.
  • La Traviata, by Giuseppe Verdi. Authentic love clashes with social hypocrisy, and the sacrifice of renunciation becomes a lesson in generosity. Verdi, the most frequently performed composer at the Bilbao Opera, and the Basque singer Piquillo appear in the bullfighters’ chorus of La Traviata. ABAO Bilbao Opera. Euskalduna Bilbao.   • Salvador Sobral. The Portuguese singer in concert. Tour presenting his new album “A flor do recomeço,” a leap into Brazilian music. His first album composed exclusively of songs by Brazilian artists. Arriaga Theatre. October 25th.

Curated Basque culture experiences in San Sebastian and Gipuzkoa – October 2026

  • “Cristóbal Balenciaga: Technique, Material, and Form”. A profound and educational exploration of the couturier’s work, influence, and legacy. Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum. March 7th, 2025 – January 10th, 2027.
  • Exhibition “Elcano-Urdaneta: The Discovery of the Oceans” Commemorating the 500th anniversary of Juan Sebastián Elcano’s little-known second voyage. Basque Maritime Museum. December 4th, 2025 to October 4th.
  • Exhibition “The Givenchyaga Family”. A meeting of the works of Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972) and Hubert de Givenchy (1927-2018). A tribute to Givenchy for his friendship, aesthetic and business affinity, and for preserving the legacy of the Basque couturier. Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, Getaria. From March 28th to February 22nd, 2027.
  • Geometric Bodies. An exhibition that analyzes both the geometric sculptural object and the scale relationship the work establishes with the space that surrounds it. Works by Chillida and two guest sculptors: Nora Aurrekoetxea and Larry Bell. Chillida-Leku Museum in collaboration with Hauser & Wirth and other leading cultural institutions. Visit the permanent collection of works by the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida. June 25th to October 26th.
  • Traditional Basque Costumes. An exhibition focused on the traditional attire of the “dantza soltea” (individual dances). The evolution of the costumes and the key elements of Basque intangible textile heritage. Organized in collaboration with the Iraultza Dantza Taldea dance group. Ardixarra Etxea Cultural Center / Interpretation Centre (Segura, Gipuzkoa). October 3rd -31rd.
  • San Sebastian Gastronomika 2026. This 28th edition, under the motto “The Spark That Ignited the Fire,” commemorates the 50th anniversary of the New Basque Cuisine (1976), the movement that revolutionized contemporary global gastronomy. Kursaal Palace, San Sebastian. October 4th-7th.
  • Martín Domínguez. San Sebastian, Madrid, Havana, New York. A retrospective of the San Sebastian architect’s life and work at the forefront of 20th-century architecture. First exhibition at the new facilities of the Basque Architecture Institute in Tabakalera. From October 6th until February 2027.
  • 50th Basque Country Dance Championship (Euskal Herriko Dantza Txapelketa) and 9th edition of Dantza Eguna (Dance Day) in Segura. The best dancers from the seven Spanish and French Basque territories compete in fandangos (accompanied by txistu or alboka) and arin-arin (to the rhythm of the trikitixa). Judges are specialists in dance and the design and history of traditional clothing. Baratze Fronton (Segura, Gipuzkoa). October 17th.
  • Hiru (meaning 3 in Basque). Kresala Dantza Taldea. Iturritik Jaialdia Dance Festival. A scenic journey where dance, music, and poetry converse with the sea, the rock, the wind, and the sky, inspired by the sculptural universe of Eduardo Chillida. Victoria Eugenia Theatre. October 24th.
